BACKGROUND:
Kate is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) who has been providing psychotherapy and counseling to individuals, couples, and families in Vermont for over twenty-five years. She has also had over thirty years of experience working in the field of human services in various capacities.
Kate's experience as a psychotherapist is varied and extensive. She has worked as an outpatient counselor for individuals, couples, and families across a broad scope of client populations and in a wide range of therapeutic settings (private practice, human service agencies, a community mental health organization, a university counseling center, and a primary care clinic). Earlier in her counseling career, she also served as a crisis clinician on a crisis response team and as a counselor in a public school.
For nine years, Kate was an Allied Health/Clinical staff member in Fletcher Allen Health Care's Department of Psychiatry and a Psychotherapist/Behavioral Health Clinician in the Department of Primary Care Family Medicine at the South Burlington Family Practice clinic. She also maintained a part-time private practice during periods of her tenure at the South Burlington Family Practice. In February of 2012, she made the decision to transition into full-time private practice.
Kate received a BA degree from St. Lawrence University and a MS degree from the University of Vermont's CACREP accredited graduate program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She previously studied at the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria, and she received a certificate in Primary Care Behavioral Health from the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. She also completed additional post-graduate coursework at UVM following her Master's degree. Over the past twenty years, Kate has participated in numerous clinical trainings, seminars, and conferences on various topics and disciplines within the mental health field. In 2006, she also took part in a cultural and language immersion course in Latin America on the topic of multicultural counseling. In 2013, Kate traveled to Oregon and Arizona to participate in an intensive 80-hour didactic, experiential, and process-oriented course in Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), receiving a Level I certificate in IFS upon completion. Since this time, she has continued to participate in peer consultation groups with other IFS informed practitioners from around the country. In 2014, Kate served as a member of the training staff in the role of Program Assistant (PA) for an 80-hour Level I IFS training in Berkeley, CA. In 2015, Kate traveled to New Mexico to take part in an IFS based retreat on Shame, Attachment, and Self Compassion. In 2015 and 2016, Kate traveled to Oregon to participate in an IFS Intensive Level II training- (72 hours) focusing on using the IFS model with couples (IFIO). Kate has also been trained in EMDR Levels 1 & 2 (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as well as in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). Kate is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). Kate previously served on the Advisory Board for the University of Vermont Graduate Counseling Degree Program.
Prior to becoming a therapist, Kate was a middle school social studies teacher, a coach, a wilderness leader, outdoor instructor, and Wilderness First Responder (WFR), as well as an environmental educator and a ropes course instructor. She has had experience with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Lander, Wyoming and also led outdoor adventure trips for Adventures Cross Country (ARCC) based in Sausalito, California. She has traveled extensively throughout the United States and internationally.
